New Nightclubs for Overweight People Opening, Sir Mix-a-Lot: "There Is a Heaven"

it was a grand night for sir mix-a-lot

So, it’s been a few years since average (“real”) became the new thin – thanks to Dove, a bunch of studies and trend pieces on size and attractiveness, and the fact that there aren’t any more thin people in America – but is fat now the new average?  There’s More To Love, the dating show, and Dance Your Ass Off, the dancing show, and The Biggest Loser, the original “fat show titled exactly as insultingly as networks and taste will allow for.”  ”Fat,” the adjective, is even being reclaimed from the taunting, hungry mouths of the thins, a la “queer” in the ’70s.

“But I don’t think fat is a bad word anymore,” she adds. “I think a lot of people embrace it now.”

And now: special nightclubs that cater to overweight people…

But what has been slower coming, fat advocates say, are places like Club Bounce, where people who might have some trouble getting past the velvet ropes at other night spots because of their size are made to feel like they fit right in.

“When you’re not what they consider ideal, you know, and you’re out there trying to get your dance on at those other places, you get the looks, the stares. But not here. Everything’s accepted here,” says Vanessa Gray of Long Beach.

I’m no expert, but I think the medical establishment is pretty much in agreement that humiliation = not an effective weight-loss prod.  You ever see an episode of Intervention in which the addict’s family boos the guy into rehab?  No.  (Great recent It’s Always Sunny episode of that shade, though.)  So this all-accepting, fat-centric nightclub thing is a force for good, and, you know, even if it were questionable, turning a profit on fringe interests of debatable societal merit is as American as Craz-E Burgers and prescription painkillers 4 less.

Here’s an interesting tidbit the original FOX article glosses right over:

The club, with a capacity of 400, attracts relatively equal numbers of men and women, although Garbo says about three-quarters of the women tend to be heavy, while only about a quarter of the men are.

Weird, right?  But then, at many clubs, being fat or thin doesn’t matter if you’re a man.  Because you’re not getting in either way.  I would guess that’s what’s behind this stat.
