PETA: Saving Animals By Mocking Fat People

peta save the whales lose the blubber ad 1

I get the impression that PETA does all its ads in-house.  The PETA folks came up with the whole theme of beautiful women stripping in order to protest fur, and we all said, ok PETA good work, good ads.  But that was kind of a lay-up, you know?  It didn’t even have to make sense: it was “I’d rather go naked than wear fur,” but it could just as well have been “I’d rather go naked than beat rabbits to death with a wrench,” and if naked Joanna Krupa were telling me that, I would literally stop beating rabbits to death with a wrench right now.  Using naked women to sell something isn’t exactly Varsity Advertising.

After that campaign, though, PETA got cocky with their own abilities, and it’s been downhill from there.  A blood-soaked “Unhappy Meal” for your kids?  No thanks, PETA.  And now this: a billboard reading “Save the Whales!  Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian.”  For whatever reason, some people are upset about this…

What does it even mean, logically speaking?  Are our nation’s fat people eating all the whales right out of the ocean?  If we stop, we’ll become fitter and they’ll become more plentiful?  Unlikely.  I think they mean to imply that fat people are fat like big fat whales, right PETA?  But then if you eat only crappy vegetables, you’ll lose all your “blubber” (fat), you will “save the whales”?  Even though you are actually subtracting from the whale population, by this logic?  Maybe it’s an issue of overpopulation?  Or maybe the implication is that fat people are competing with whales for the earth’s resources and the whales are losing because they don’t have opposable thumbs to hold the new Taco Bell Bacon Cheesy Potato Burrito?

In any event, reactions have not been positive:

I know I shouldn’t be surprised by PETA’s latest billboard campaign in Florida – after all, their brand of activism has proven to be sexist and racist time and time again – why not fat-shaming to boot?

In conclusion, if I were a fat person and I saw this billboard, I would eat the first ten animals I saw.  Out of spite.  Try again, PETA.
