Update: S.C. Governor Mark Sanford Was Carrying On Affair in Argentina
June 24th, 2009

Hookers and coke, I speculated this morning, were what brought South Carolina governor Mark Sanford to Argentina during his four days missing in action. Since the media has been chowing down on this story like a BK Super Seven Incher, Sanford was not going to be able to hide the suspicious details of his speed vacation (cars parked at different airports, staff members who claimed to be in touch with him yet didn’t know where he was).
So he probably played the right card in calling an immediate and, to all appearances, candid press conference. ”The bottom line is, I have been unfaithful to my wife.”
Sanford claims his relationship with the Argentine woman began innocently, “as [he] suspects many of these things do,” with email correspondence. About a year ago, it got physical. Sanford’s wife has known about the affair for five months. The latest trip, he said, served to break off the relationship in Argentina. In light of this, it is difficult to know what to make of her statement over the weekend:
“He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids,” Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press while vacationing at the family’s Sullivans Island beachhouse. She said she didn’t know where he was, but wasn’t concerned.
Perhaps she was genuinely happy, if the governor was indeed calling off his spicy Latin adultery, as he claimed.
“I hurt her, I hurt you all, I hurt my wife, I hurt my boys…”
So… what happens now? My guesses: 1) Sanford won’t resign, 2) Sanford will seek help for a drinking problem, and 3) Sanford will not become president.
Also, I maintain that none of this specifically precludes the possibility of hooker- or cocaine-related details arising.
