Will Be Huge: Gabriella Cilmi
I’m trying a new occasional feature on for size. I thought of it in the shower just now. In “Will Be Huge,” I’m going to make predictions about artists or songs I think will blow up in the U.S. For example, I first heard Lady GaGa‘s “Just Dance” on French radio in October, when no one in the U.S. knew who the hell Lady GaGa was. By the time I left Europe in December, I was hearing “Just Dance” and “Pokerface” at least once a day on the radio. Within a month, Lady GaGa was the most famous person ever.
What I’m trying to say here is I discovered Lady GaGa before you did. I would like to share this special gift I have with you so that you too can be “in the know.”
First up, Gabriella Cilmi, a soul-ish gal singer of very catchy songs who has the lungs and vocal cords of someone a lot older and bigger than a 17-year-old girl. She sings like an angel. An angel who is not taking nonsense from nobody. Music video! after the jump.
Her first single “Sweet About Me” debuted in April of last year and climbed to number 6 on the British and Dutch charts and number 1 on the Australian charts (she’s Australian). It was released in the U.S. in February of this year, and Cilmi appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon two months ago.
The “Sweet About Me” video is about her beating up a bunch of guys. Listen to it twice and you will agree with me on this “will be huge” call.

OK, here’s a bonus one. Second single “Save the Lies.” For some reason, the embedding capability for the “official videos” of these songs has been disabled on YouTube, so here’s a link to the music video.
