Director Michel Gondry Discusses Fight Scenes in the "Green Hornet", Starring Seth Rogen

Everything by French director Michel Gondry is, in short, pure awesomeness. Not only are his music videos for high-profile artists– such as, Björk, The White Stripes, D.A.F.T. Punk, Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, and The Rolling Stones– visually and mentally arousing, but so are his movies.

The second movie he directed, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, is easily one of my all-time favorite films, and never fails to move me despite having seen it over a million times already. So it should come as no surprise to discover that actor/funny man Seth Rogen trusts the creative genius directing him in next year’s highly-anticipated film, “The Green Hornet.”

Michel Gondry, however, is surprised by the actor’s trust in his abilities. And while the man must clearly know he’s an artistic savant, I appreciate his humble attitude. Hollyweird could use an extra shot or two of modesty.

“[Rogen] actually trusts me, which is quite amazing — I mean, look at my numbers on IMDb, and my average is $10 million and his average is $90 million a movie,” laughed the director, whose amazing visuals are on display again in this month’s “More Videos 2″ DVD, which compiles some of his eye-dazzling clips for bands like Radiohead and the White Stripes. “So I’m glad he’s paying any attention to what I’m suggesting.”

A big reason Rogen is listening to Gondry is because of the fight scene he shot as a demo, which contains moves Rogen had difficulty describing but the French visionary attempted to put into words for us. “It was not elaborate. … I changed the speed of the camera at different spots in the image at different times. So it seems like [Green Hornet and Kato] are in the same world but at different times, and then they’re back together,” he explained. “[The camera] speeds up and slows down but [at] different times for different characters’ images. So one will go fast and the other will go slow — and then they’ll meet. It’s [as if] they’re in different dimensions, but when they touch each other, they come into the same dimension.”

If that doesn’t sound cool enough for you, Gondry also told us that he’s on the verge of casting a household name as the film’s evildoer. “The villain is going to be horrible; he has a gun with two cannons, so he can shoot people in both eyes with one shot,” Gondry explained, denying that the character will be either Mr. X or Dr. Mabouse. “I hope I’m going to get the actor I want; I can’t say his name, but believe me — he’s going to be scary like hell.”

I’m trying my hardest not to have high expectations of this film, for fear of disappointment. Michel Gondry and Seth Rogen are easily two of my all-time favorite talents, and it’s been a pleasure seeing their careers flourish over the years. Sure, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are both talented, beautiful, and giving, but sometimes you just want to admire average joes who were given an opportunity to shine.

soooo… is this a comedy? Or an action film? Seth Rogen isn’t the first name that comes to mind if the later is true, lol.
